Peak Performance: LawNet Challenge 2016

RIAA Barker Gillette soar to new heights in Snowdonia National Park

Nine brave members of RBG set off from a sunny London with just two intentions – completing the walk, Glyders Loop in Snowdonia National Park, and not getting blisters.

As usual, George Coombes of LawNet (the event’s organiser) had set the bar high with a commitment to the word “challenge”. While the dew was still wet, the teams started out from Bryn Gwynant YHA to an unknown car park where, as the first climb pulled into view, it dawned on them that they had actively volunteered for the 11 hours of walking which lay ahead.

Breath-taking in more than one way, after 500m of pure UP, the team came to look down upon the Devil’s Kitchen. With Gordon Ramsay nowhere in sight, the team managed to source a Latte and a Lemonade – impressive, some would say. However, the team were resolute – that it’s all about the due diligence!

Onwards and upwards went the team to Tryfan and its famous twin monoliths, Adam and Eve, which crown the Snowdonian mountain. Standing at 918m, the safe haven of the café seemed a mere spec in the landscape below.

On to Glyder Fach (994m), the second highest of the Glyderau range and the sixth highest mountain in Wales, with just one way of getting there from Tryfan, a 75m vertical screed scramble. Cripes! However, our trusty guide Jim and his dog-come mountain goat made short work of it, putting us all to shame.

And there it was, the top. A beautiful plateau with a rapturous 360-degree view of the National Park. The height of the day.

We thank George Coombes of LawNet for organising another fantastic day and Jim, our guide, for steering us through the pass.
